PREPARING FOR YOUR BED BUG HEAT TREATMENT

Preparing for your heat treatment

Treating Bedbugs with heat is the most effective and toxic-free way to kill all of the bugs and eggs so that you or your customers can get back to peaceful, bite-free sleep.  However, in order to guarantee a successful treatment, we will need your help in preparing a few things before we arrive with the bed bug heater.  Many of these things are to protect your personal belonging from the high temperatures used during the bed bug heat treatment, and the rest will help make sure heat gets everywhere a bug might be.  If you have any questions while preparing, please give us a call. If we find that the property has not been prepared, we won’t be able to guarantee the treatment.  The success of this process requires both of us to work diligently together.

Steps to take before we can get rid of your bed bugs:

  • All clothes and bedding need to be put in the dryer on high for at least 20 minutes. Then they should be placed in a trash bag, sealed tight, and placed in a bath tub if possible.
  • Clothes that are on hangers can be left as long as they aren’t packed too tightly in the closet.
  • Bedding can be hung over doors and will be heat treated during our process.
  • Turn off alarms, take alarms off line if monitored, and remove batteries from smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Unplug all electronics.

Things that need to be removed:

  • Pets
  • Fish
  • Oil Paintings
  • Plants
  • VHS Tapes
  • Cassette Tapes
  • Arts and crafts that are glued together
  • Any pressurized tank ie; aerosol (i.e. hair spray, cooking oil, etc.), spray paint, oxygen tanks, and butane
  • Plastic picture frames
  • Candles, crayons
  • Plastic blinds
  • Guns and ammunition

Any items being removed from a known area of bed bugs should be wiped down and cleaned before removing them to storage so that you don’t accidentally bring the bugs back in.

Remove or put the following in the refrigerator:

  • Medications (prescriptions and over the counter)
  • Vitamins
  • Liqueur
  • Wine
  • You should also remove all jewelry, cash, heirlooms and other valuables. There will be a specialized bed bug exterminator at your property at all times during treatment but, for peace of mind, it’s a good idea to secure these items.

On the morning of your treatment please try and leave all bags, coats, and extra belongings behind so they can be treated. You should have a set of clean clothes that have been treated in the dryer that you will remove from a sealed plastic bag and put on just before leaving. The idea is to leave with just what you absolutely need so we can treat everything and minimize the chance of reintroducing any bed bugs back into the treatment area.

When you return you may notice clothes that have been moved or spread out, your mattresses will be up on end. Any plastic blinds will be taken down or secured up, and furniture may be moved.  In some cases, several items have been moved and this is all part of making sure that we get the right heat into the right areas.  We will do a walk through with you prior to treatment to verify most things have already been moved and we will be as careful as possible if we do need to move anything. However, we will not move large or valuable items and A2B Solutions is not responsible for anything that is broken during treatment of your property.

PREVENTION TIPS

PREVENTING BED BUGS IN ROOMS & ON FURNITURE

Bed bugs thrive under certain conditions which are enhanced by the availability of hiding spots close to their human hosts. Bed bugs have a strong preference for paper and wood, over metal and plastic. Porous surfaces provide more humidity and egg-laying locations. Furniture choices can greatly contribute to the control of bed bugs.

Guidelines for furniture include:

  • Replace wood frame beds with metal frame beds to discourage bed bug hiding and egg-laying on beds.
  • Eliminate head boards completely. Bed bugs hide and thrive in head boards.
  • Replace all plush furniture with metal and plastic, or items easily cleaned with soap and water. • Adding smaller cushions that can be placed in a dryer is one way to make residents more comfortable. Cushions should be dried on a hot setting if bed bugs are an issue.
  • Use only white or light colored sheets.
  • Use wooden baby cribs, but choose models that are painted white. Paint existing woodcolored cribs white. Fill gaps in the frames with silicone caulk. This will allow for much better inspection and reduce need for treatment. Avoid using pesticides on baby cribs!
  • Vinyl-covered or seamless mattresses are recommended for adult beds and cribs.
  • If vinyl mattresses have holes, consider repairing them with tape or discarding them.
  • Do not discard regular (non-vinyl) mattresses, only to replace them with other regular mattresses. Bed bugs will reinfest the new bedding quickly. Use mattress encasements
  • If a box spring is being used, be sure to encase it too. The box spring is more likely to harbor bed bugs than the mattress. • Wooden dressers, wardrobes, tables and other furniture can be painted white for easy inspection. Any crevices where a credit card will fit should first be sealed with silicone caulk to eliminate hiding spots.
  • Discard any wicker furniture. Wicker provides infinite harborage to bed bugs and is impossible to treat effectively.

Mattress Encasement’s Mattress encasements are zippered enclosures that cover the entire mattress, as if it were bagged. Encasements should always be used for non-vinyl mattresses and box springs in bed bug prevention and management. Special bed bug-proof encasements are made of high 25 Bed bug fecal stains near a duct indicate harborage and possible movement. Photo by R. Cooper. quality cloth material, so they do not tear easily, and they have no folds around the zipper for bed bugs to find shelter. Cheaper vinyl encasements are available but need to be installed carefully to avoid tears in the vinyl. If a small hole appears, duct tape can be used to repair it. Holes MUST be repaired to prevent bed bugs from either gaining protection on the inside of the cover, or to prevent bed bugs from escaping from the infested bedding. Encasing both mattress and box spring eliminates the need to discard bedding by trapping bed bugs inside and providing a smooth simple outer surface that can be inspected, vacuumed and cleaned easily. It is highly recommended that mattresses and box springs be encased, to preserve the sleeping area and to make bed bug inspections quick and easy.

Other room guidelines:

  • Moldings and joints around the room perimeter (floor, doors, cabinets, and windows) should be caulked with silicone sealant to eliminate hiding spots for both bed bugs and cockroaches.
  • Openings around pipes or other structures that come through walls, floors and ceilings must be sealed. This will help with bed bugs, mice and cockroaches.
  • People should keep sleeping in the room to avoid spreading bed bugs to other rooms or apartments, when possible.
  • Residents should not store belongings under the bed when dealing with a bed bug infestation. This provides plenty of hiding spots that are difficult to clean.

Issues between rooms: Often, bed bugs infesting a room or unit will make their way to an adjacent room or unit through electrical, heat and phone line conduits. It is important to identify cases where this happens and approach the spread from both sides of the wall.

Evidence that may suggest room to room movement of bed bugs includes:

  • Bed bugs in ceiling light fixtures
  • Bed bugs hiding in and coming out of electrical and switch plates on walls and bed bug droppings found on the inside of the switch plates, or near ducts
  • Bed bugs frequently found in unusual locations, such as the kitchen or bathroom. In such a case, it may be that the kitchen or bathroom is located adjacent to an infested bedroom or heavily infested unit, and bed bugs are traveling along water pipes.
Donations of clothing and household items

Donations of clothing, shoes, coats, toys and other personal belongings are vital to many programs that help the disadvantaged. But sometimes when people discover bed bugs in their homes, they discard many personal belongings, and it is unclear how much of these discarded personal belongings make it to the donation stream. It is therefore important to be very careful about 26 donated items to avoid the introduction or spread of bed bugs in your facility or home.

Suggested precautions for donations include:

  • Wash and especially DRY on HOT all clothing, shoes, coats, linens, blankets, and plush toys before distribution.
  • Sort donations on a clean linoleum floor. Prevent the escape of bed bugs into your facility by sorting inside a perimeter of carpet (double-sided) tape placed around the working space. This creates a sticky barrier that bed bugs cannot cross.
  • Shake out clothing; inspect books and toys carefully using the identifying guide in this manual. • Ban all cardboard boxes for donations from your facility. Instead use clear plastic bags.
  • Keep sorted and laundered items away from items that have not been checked or treated.

I called a2b for a bedbug heat treatment and they were so helpful and professional. One of my examples of their above and beyond customer service is I originally paid for the 18 month warranty but decided 12 month was suffeceint. Dave came with my refund check and I went and deposited it right away. I went back home to check in and he said that I didn't get charged the extra $300 for them heating the crawl space of the home. I told him I discussed the crawl space when ordering with them. So he called his manager and they asked if they could just have the $100 refund check I received to cut the difference. But since I had already deposited it he said don't worry about it since it was their mistake for not originally charging me. They didn't have to do that and help me out like that but they did and it shows how much they care and value their customers and communication. This is beyond a huge help to me from all the money I have already lost due to the bugs. Thank you thank you from the bottom of my heart for the service and discount. Now fingers crossed I am bedbug free! Highly reccomend.

I cannot say enough good things about A2B. We spoke and worked with a variety of people (four in total), and every single one went out of their way to answer our million questions and also find solutions. Every now and then, there are times when you come across people who far exceed your expectations in their line of work and in doing so, make your life just a little bit easier. These situations are a gift. The people at A2B are those people. If I ever need anything again in an arena they provide service in, I will unquestionably take my business there. Thanks for everything!

I recently moved out and the house I moved into I thought we might have bed bugs so I called around and a2b solutions was the only place who didn’t seem to want to take advantage of the fact that I had no idea what I was doing or where to look. They came out the very next day and inspected for FREE while other places wanted to charge me 300 just to come look!! Thank goodness we do not have bed bugs. I even asked him to double check the other rooms which he did happily as well as respond to a email after he left with a picture I sent. They called back within 5 minutes. Natasha was also super friendly and helpful. Highly recommend this company! THANK YOU!

We had our treatment on June 27th. If you are searching for this service, then you already know what a nightmare having bed bugs is. A2B provided EXCELLENT service! They got back to me right away to set up the inspection. Everything was explained to us in detail; they were timely, professional and kind. The tech who performed the service took obvious care with our belongings and even spent some extra time in the heat to ensure a couple of trouble spots got up to the required temperature. Well worth the money - we are some VERY SATISFIED customers!

Thank the heavens but we did not have bed bugs and did not have to get a treatment for bed bugs. My wife and I thought for sure that we had them and even almost treated for them through another company. Something in my gut said the other company seemed shady and I decided to get a second opinion. A gentleman named Barrett came over and he approached the inspection with great care and an attention to detail that I did not get from the other company. I am not going to bad mouth them because this a reflection of the positive attributes of Barrett and his company A2B but they tried to use my wife and my fear to sell us a service we did not need. Barrett showed me that the spots the other company said were bed bug poop were actually just spots in the wood grain. Sensing our fear we truly had bed bugs he proceeded to spend nearly an hour looking for any sign. He couldn't find anything and wouldn't book our home for his service because he truly felt that we did not have bed bugs! Turns out the relative where we thought we got the bed bugs from didn't have bed bugs after all and we almost got duped out of couple thousand dollars. Thank the heavens, listening to my gut and Barrett from A2B that didn't happen. I have never left a review before but when I tried to pay for the inspection he would not accept payment as they are offered for free. Barrett said his payment would be a google review if I was so inclined so here I am figuring this out.
